Old and New Faces Mix in St. Louis
Jeff Fisher took major steps to try and improve on a 6-10 season, shocking the NFL world by trading Sam Bradford, changing Offensive Coordinators, and in general, the style of football the Rams will play in 2015. Fisher is an experienced coach and obviously not afraid to shake things up. His 2015 team will hopefully be more reliable and give him something to build on. Read More on St. Louis Rams
With Sam Bradford gone, the Rams turn to Nick Foles to lead the offense. Foles may not have the talent of Bradford but at least he may actually be on the field for a full season. New Offensive Coordinator Frank Cignetti hopes to give Foles plenty of support in the running game, using Tre Mason as the primary running back. Mason came aboard as a welcome surprise, rushing for almost 800 yards in only 11 games. His quick moves and breakaway speed make him a player who can change the game with one play. Look for Fisher to work #1 pick Todd Gurley into the offense slowly to spell Mason.
Kenny Britt and Brian Quick provide Foles with reliable receivers down the field, while Tavon Austin has proven to be a reliable receiver in the slot. Tight Ends Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks will be more involved in this offense, working the short passing game Cignetti hopes to employ.
Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams loves to mix things up, concocting complicated schemes and coverages. In his second season, Williams will have the talent of Nick Fairley to provide pressure up front, along with Chris Long and Robert Quinn. The linebackers slots are filled by James Laurinaitis and Alec Ogletree, both competent to very good linebackers. Jo-Lonn Dunbar also looks to fill a spot.
The secondary will make a big difference facing Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, and Carson Palmer, twice each season. Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson come back with more experience but also a reputation for giving up the big catch. Williams will have to give them some help to cut down on long completions. Rodney McLeod is capable of that after a promising season in 2014, while T.J McDonald is better in the run protection that coverage.
The Gut Check
Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams have their work cut out for them. They must integrate new faces into a new scheme, and make it work from the first game of the season when they welcome the Seattle Seahawks to the Edward Jones Dome. The Rams are in a tough division and finishing at 8-8 would be a major accomplishment.
If the Rams are going mountain climbing it all begins with scaling the NFC West. Each and every team in this division has its’ own quirks and weaknesses. It’s not impossible to picture the St. Louis Rams making a quick turnaround. The measuring stick comes within the NFC West where St. Louis will welcome the Seahawks, Cardinals, and 49ers to the Edward Jones Dome. Tough games against the San Diego Chargers and the Atlanta Falcons are also good choices in Rams tickets. But who knows what Rams ticket will let you see Sam Bradford play his breakout game? No telling. So don’t miss a single minute of the 2015 St. Louis Rams.
St. Louis Rams tickets are the best way to catch the Sam Bradford show. After winning only a single game in 2009 the Rams had the luxury of choosing the best player available. That turned out to be the strong armed and savvy quarterback out of Oklahoma. Bradford seems to be the prototype NFL quarterback. He’s big, an accurate passer, and has no discernible personal quirks to provide an unwanted diversion. The St. Louis Rams have a long way to go, but if Sam Bradford pans out they’ll have cleared a major hurdle in their march to respectability.
Sam Bradford will be expected to pay immediate dividends. Fans with Rams tickets should be prepared to live with the ups and downs of a rookie quarterback in the NFL. Bradford ran a different system in college and didn’t spend much time under center. Learning how defense is played in the NFL will be a challenge, but if the audience can hold fast, Sam Bradford offers real hope. Of course, it won’t hurt Bradford to be handing off to Steven Jackson. This is a complete NFL running back, a guy who can run between the tackles, turn the corner, and be productive in the passing game. Jackson gained 1,416 yards on the ground in 2009 and seems to be able to handle the work load. At wide receiver the Rams like Donnie Avery, who bulked up for 2010 without losing any speed. From there the field is wide open with Laurent Robinson, Danny Amendola, and Brandon Gibson all vying for playing time. Overall, the St. Louis Rams hope to be consistent on offense, building on the running of Steven Jackson, and letting Sam Bradford learn the ropes.
The Rams defense has got to get better and they’ve got to do it with the same personnel who were victimized last season. Obviously the young guys have to step up. Defensive lineman Chris Long was a late bloomer in 2009 but seems to have gotten his feet under him. It was also nice to see rookie James Lairinaitis waltz in and play like a wily veteran from the beginning. The Rams pass protection suffered as the injury bug hit, but everyone appears to be in good shape this year. Still, this unit has a long way to go and must play at the top of their game every week to help out an offense that won’t score points in bunches.
