Winter has a special significance for football fans. That's the time when football, for the most part a fall sport, hosts its biggest game of the year: the Super Bowl. Most are content to watch the game at home-based parties or at sports bars, while a few make the trip of a lifetime to see it in person. Frontrow.com sells Super Bowl tickets and hotel packages.

Who will be there this year? Right out of the gate the Giants just don't seem to have it. Dallas has a lot to pro...especially in December. Can Romo win? And what about Green Bay? Rogers definitely looks good. The Saints have been lethal on both sides of the ball. The AFC may seem a bit tougher to pick but when you consider that whatever the Ravens had a year ago, they ain't got now, Baltimore is out. Nashville's horrific start is likely to keep them out of the post season all together.

How about the Chargers? Mean time, the Pats have not won the big games against the tough teams and Pittsburgh has not been consistent. Want to see the game for yourself?

FrontRow.com sells tickets to all of the big games, Playoffs and AFC and NFC Championships. Regardless of matchup, Frontow.com has the best selection of Super Bowl tickets and Super Bowl Hotel packages. We buy Super Bowl tickets for top prices. Frontrow.com also sells tickets to all Super Bowl parties including the Super Bowl Tailgate party, Playboy party and Maxim party. Our Super Bowl hotel packages range from economy to deluxe hotel accommodations .

The Chicago Cubs' Goat

Many long suffering Chicago Cubs fans prefer to blame a goat; Sam Sianis reputedly put a curse on the team after owner P.K. Wrigley made him remove his pet goat from Wrigley Field during the 1945 World Series. They haven't been back since. There was the infamous collapse in 1969, and subsequent misfires in 1984 (gruesome), 1989, 1998, 2001, 2003 (doubly greusome), and of course 2007 and 2008.

But OK, if a goat has been the problem since '45, how does it account for World Series loses in 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, and 1938? There really needs to be another explanation. How about this: the land on which Chicago sits was once a swamp. Legend has it that the city's name derives from "Checagou" or "shikaakwa," an Algonquin Indian word variously translated as "stinky onion" or "big stink." These historical footnotes nicely capture the metaphorical truth about the Cubs. They stink, and they play like a creature that either lives in a swamp or got lost staggering through one and can't get out.

The fact is, mediocrity has been a byword for the Cubs since before any of us were born. The team predictably returns there after rising above the muck for a season or two. Consider what we've seen in this spring and summer of 2009:

* Manager Lou Pinella has made some really bizarre personnel moves, especially with his pitching staff. He's used Carlos Zambrano as a pinch hitter, and others as pinch runners. In a game against the Cardinals last weekend he played relief pitcher Sean Marshall in left field for one batter. That same game also saw Jake Fox, their designated hitter in games against American League clubs, put in a couple innings as catcher; Fox hasn't played the position regularly since '06.

* The offense has gone in the dumper. Cubs bats were potent last season, generating over 5 runs per game. Now they're putting up just over 4. One run might not seem like a lot, but in the majors it's the difference between 2nd and 24th. Onbase percentage and slugging percentage have taken similar dives from 2nd and 5th last year to 22nd and 23rd this year. Stars like Catcher Geovany Soto and outfielders Alfonso Soriano and Kusuke Fukudome are all hitting under .250.

* Milton Bradley, their big free agent acquisition, has been a head case. This is nothing out of the ordinary to be sure. He was a head case with the Texas Rangers as well. The difference is he was a productive head case for the Rangers. For the Cubs, he is a clubhouse distraction AND a .236 hitter.

* The relief pitching can't close the deal. Their walk rate is highest in the majors. No wonder they have 13 losses and only 19 saves in 32 attempts.

* Only one player, starting pitcher Ted Lilly, has performed well enough to justify making an appearance at the All Star Game. Last year there were seven Cubs.

* Executives at Tribune Co. are thinking about taking the team into bankruptcy for a couple days to facilitate a sale; this has nothing whatever to do with on-field play, it's just symbolic of the kind of thing that happens to a woebegone, snake bitten franchise.

And yet an often unnoticed aspect of mediocrity in general and the Cubs in particular is that even in the worst cases one sees flashes of competence and reason to hope for better things. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, out since May 8 with a dislocated shoulder, is back in the lineup. Given that the Cubs went 24-26 and hit .247 in his absence, his return might restore some of the punch they've been missing.

Then there's the starting rotation. Somehow amid all the craziness and injuries that have taken out Ryan Dempster and limited the effectiveness of Zambrano, they're 5th in the majors with a 3.80 starting-pitcher ERA and first in quality starts at 53. Ted Lilly and Randy Wells have taken up the slack with ERAs of 3.32 and 2.48 respectively.

So what does this portend? We'll take it as a given that unless Dame Misfortune gets distracted by world financial markets or the Middle East, the Cubs are not going to win their first World Series since 1908. What might still be within reach is a division title. A 43-43 team should not be in any position to say that, but the National League Central is somewhat less than imposing this year. The St. Louis Cardinals are only ahead by 3.5 games.

One of two things are likely to happen: 1) Cub bats revive, they make a late run that carries them first across the finish line, and then lose in the playoffs to the Dodgers or Giants or Phillies. 2) Cubs bats revive just enough for the team to compete for the division, but at the end they fall short. Given its history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, scenario two is the better bet.

Either way, the fates will once again have gotten their goat.
