A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Dave Matthews began playing the guitar at age nine. After moving from country to country, Matthews finally settled in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he quickly found his niche in the local music scene. He began performing with the encouragement of Tim Reynolds, a local musician with whom Matthews would later collaborate. After landing a gig at a professional modern dance performance, Matthews decided in 1990 that it was time to start his own band. The Dave Matthews band was officially formed in 1991 and consists of violin player Boyd Tinsley, saxophonist Leroi Moore, drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, and keyboardist Peter Griesar. They became a local hit, playing weekly gigs in Charlottesville clubs and restaurants. Sensing that the band was bound for great success, Peter Griesar left the band in 1993 to avoid the demanding touring schedule. The Dave Matthews Band released their first album, Remember Two Things, on November 9, 1993, debuting on the college charts and eventually earning gold status. It was followed in 1994 with their first LP, Under the Table and Dreaming, which featured hit singles "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching". This album, along with its follow-up, Crash, brought national attention to the Dave Matthews band, earning them a Grammy award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. They also received four other nominations between 1996 and 1997. They went on to produce their third album with RCA, Before These Crowded Streets, as well as two live albums before splitting from longtime producer Steve Lillywhite in 2000.
After their split with Lillywhite, the Dave Matthews Band came back to the studio in October 2000 refreshed and ready to record with new producer Glen Ballard. The result of their sessions, the 2001 release Everyday, was a huge colossal success, furthering the band's popularity. Since then, the Dave Matthews band has released two more studio albums, Busted Stuff and Stand Up, as well as a number of live recordings from their various performances. In their fifteen years together, the Dave Matthews Band has become a staple in the stereos of college students across the country and have been widely praised for their unique sound.
