Dolphins: Can They Repeat the Magic?
Typically when an NFL team wins their division the previous season, returns all of its superstar players and has an outstanding draft class, they are more often than not projected to win their division again. Typically. Such is not the case, with the 2009 Miami Dolphins. Coming off an unprecedented 10-game turnaround and AFC East Division Championship in 2008, after the disastrous 2007 club that went 1-15, the Miami Dolphins enter 2009 as dark horse candidate to make the playoffs. The reason is simple, the return of Quarterback Tom Brady to the New England Patriots who missed almost all of last season with a knee injury he received being hit by Kansas City Chiefs Safety Bernard Pollard. His 2009 return has led to almost every NFL expert to peg the New England Patriots as the favorite to win the AFC East and possibly the Super Bowl.
Another strike going against the Miami Dolphins this season is the fact that the Fins’ are playing the NFL’s toughest schedule. With road games at Atlanta, San Diego and Tennessee, and tough home games against Indianapolis, New Orleans and Pittsburgh. Combined with the existing divisional foes New England, New York and Buffalo it’s not expected for the Dolphins to win nearly as many games in ‘09 as they did in ’08. Why in the world did the NFL give this toughest schedule privilege to the Dolphins and not the current world champion Pittsburgh Steelers? (Why in the world do we have “coaches challenges” but fumbles are not review-able?) Who knows? Regardless of the reason, it’s certainly not good for a team that is in all aspects still recovering and retooling its unit from the disaster that was Cam Cameron. Sorry Dol-fans, not even new minority owners Jimmy Buffet, Marc Antony, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan and the Williams sisters could have helped you there. But all is not lost, and there are plenty of tools and tricks (ala Wildcat) for the Parcells-Ireland team to use to right the ship. New rookie cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith have both been outstanding so far in the preseason, echoing back to the days of when Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison were blanketing wide receivers. Sean Smith from Utah, shined recently in the first preseason game, and Davis from Illinois, the bigger and more physical of the two, has seen a wealth of playing time and is the expected favorite to start come opening day against the Falcons. The other fresh face on the Dolphins roster that is causing a stir is rookie quarterback Pat White out of West Virginia. While many perceived his drafting as a piece of the “Wildcat” puzzle, the Miami coaching staff is primarily concerned with teaching him the fundamentals of playing as a pocket quarterback. Although the slasher QB is certainly more comfortable out in the open field, so far under the tutelage of starting QB Chad Pennington he is coming along nicely. But don’t worry, he is still going to get some playing time as a wide-out and other possible wrinkles in the “Wildcat” as the coaching staff continues to build on the NFL’s biggest sensation in 2008. The most drama and uncertainty of the upcoming season is at the wide receiver position. Third-year starter Ted Ginn is expected to continue at the number-one spot, but after that, it’s wide open. Devon Bess, the un-drafted player out of Hawaii is impressing in his 2nd year, as well is Greg Camarillo and the rookie Brian Hartline. The wide receiver position has been a disappointment for the Miami Dolphins in the past years, and the key to some added success of the football team could literally rest in the sure-hands of these few guys. Aside from the rookies, there are plenty of returning faces around the organization; Chad Pennington once again looks to be in top form and ready to lead. The always calm and quiet leader seems to not mind the competition he faces with young quarterbacks Chad Henne and Pat White nipping at his heels. DE Jason Taylor makes his return to the club after a one-year stint with the Washington Redskins, and he will play opposite the exuberant Joey Porter, who led the team and entire AFC in sacks last season. Quite possibly the best running-back tandem in football, Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are both back and looking better than ever. Brown is expected to carry the load as the starting tailback and “Wildcat” specialist; Williams will be resuming his role as a third-down back and short yardage duties.
Regardless of the total outcome of the wins and losses in the upcoming 2009 season, 2nd year head coach Tony Sparano certainly has this team back in the AFC picture. No longer the doormat of the AFC East (thank-you Buffalo Bills) the Dolphins re-emergence as a major player in the NFL starts with the foundation built by Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano. So while the Dolphins may not repeat the magic of the 2008 season, they have a put in place a system that will keep them competitive for the years to come.
And regardless of what happens, you can be there to witness it live and in person. But you'll need tickets. Remember, for the best Dolphin tickets or for the best tickets and seats at the best prices for other games, visit us here:
