Cutting Edge Band Uses Cutting Edge Architecture
Normally when we think of any famous rock band, we think of their music. That includes the voices, the musical instruments, and maybe even the costumes and special-effects machines. The one thing we normally don't even consider is architecture.
That is, until recently. More and more, bands are thinking about how they look on stage, and how the architecture of the stage adds to that effect. Take, for instance, the classic, yet always cutting-edge, band U2.
After more than 30 years as one of rock music’s most celebrated pioneers, the Irish band famously known as U2 is once again breaking new ground in the touring circuit with an innovative stage design for the group’s 360° Tour.
The progressive architecture design revolves around a circular shaped stage placed in the center of the venue’s field, with no designated front or back, to ensure audiences a 360° view of the band. The four-legged structure, nicknamed “the claw” by band members, also offers a circular silk screen hanging all the way around the stage to increase the view for audience members sitting further back.
Not only does this design allow audiences an unobstructed view, but with each leg of the structure set up with its own sound system for better audio, and the increased seating generated with the circular stage, this tour cleverly increases U2’s proximity with their fans and establishes an intimate atmosphere oftentimes found in smaller venues. The show is also expected to set records for attendance at each venue based on this set up.
Architect Mark Fisher worked with U2’s show director Willie Williams to foster the concept inspired by the Theme Building at the Los Angeles International Airport. At 164 feet tall, and requiring 120 trucks to transport, production for the 360° tour is expected to be higher than any previous U2 tour. However, the band is doing its part to stay green despite the potentially significant environmental impact this tour could have by purchasing carbon offsets.

Despite the fact Fisher said he’s been toying with the idea of a similarly designed stage set up since the band’s 2006 Vertigo tour, the 360° Tour will mark the first time U2 has hit the road with the one-of-a-kind construction. And the stage design isn’t the only new addition to the U2 empire; additionally, this tour kicks off a new contract between the band and Blackberry, signaling the end of a previous contract U2 held with Apple, Inc.
The U2 360° Tour, featuring the group’s 12th studio album No Line on the Horizon, is already underway in Europe and will make its way to the U.S. Sept. 12 at Solider Field in Chicago. It is expected to consist of about 90 shows worldwide and will continue through 2010. This is U2’s first stadium world tour since 2005.
As a special treat for fans, several general admission tickets will be randomly selected for seating closest to the stage. Members of U2.com are also being offered presale tickets based on the length of their membership.
Tickets are accessible based on a tiered pricing system, with the highest tier being marginally more expensive than the previous U2 tour and the bottom tier being less expensive. Tickets prices range from $30 to $250 via Ticketmaster, with general admission setting fans back $55 per ticket stub.
Despite weak economic times, six U.S. shows have already completely sold out, including the inaugural show in Chicago. Second shows were added to some venues including Boston, Chicago and New York. The last 2009 U.S. stop is Oct. 25, with more dates expected for 2010 in June and July.
Opening performers for the tour include Black Eyed Peas, Muse, Snow Patrol, Glasvegas and Kaiser Chiefs.
Dates scheduled for the 2009 leg of the tour include stops in 14 European cities and 17 shows in the U.S. between September and October. American tour dates include: Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Charlottesville, Va., Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Norman, Okla., Phoenix, Tampa, Fla., and Washington.
