US Open 2009 Brings Great Expectations
The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year with the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon preceding it. Thus far, it has truly been an exciting year with good reason! There have been record-breaking games and changes in the ranks in this year’s Men’s Singles leaving the public thrilled and yearning for more. After the epic battle at Wimbledon last year between Federer and Nadal, the 2009 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event of the year, brought with it another Nadal victory over Federer, keeping Nadal at number one and Federer at number two. Federer walked away from this loss in tears. After all, this match brought back memories of Federer’s failure at Wimbledon last year.
This year’s French Open brought with it an upturn for Federer. Robin Söderling’s defeat over Nadal made the final match between him and Federer. Federer defeated Söderling and matched Pete Sampras’s record of 14 Grand Slam titles.
Andy Roddick gave Federer a run for his money at the Wimbledon final this year. After 30 games played in the fifth set, Federer finally won. Post-win, Federer said, “It was a crazy match, it was an unbelievable end, and my head is still spinning. It’s an unbelievable moment in my career.” Federer had a lot on the line going into Wimbledon, and, after a long hard fight, he finally came out on top.
Deemed by ESPN an “instant classic”, this match is one to remember not only because it marks the record amount of games ever played in a set at the Wimbledon final but also because this win restores Federer’s title as number one. This is the same number one title that Federer simultaneously lost with the match against Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon last year.
Fortunately for Federer, Nadal’s tendinitis prevented him from playing at Wimbledon this year. After Nadal’s victory at Wimbledon in 2008, Federer claimed that his goal was to regain the Wimbledon victory this year. With Nadal out of the running at Wimbledon, Federer played Roddick. This pairing previously caused Roddick a loss at Wimbledon three times and the U.S. once. Much to Roddick’s dismay, this year’s Wimbledon brought Roddick yet another defeat against Federer.
Perhaps Roddick will have better luck when he plays on his own soil come the U.S. Open. He is currently ranked number five in the world. After his record-long last set at Wimbledon this year, the public surely expects great things from Roddick come the U.S. Open. With the motivation of his local fans, quite possibly Roddick will push both Nadal and Federer aside in this year’s final Grand Slam event.
Nonetheless, this year’s U.S. Open in Flushing, New York City will not only bring Nadal and Federer back on the court, but it will also bring back Andre Agassi. No, do not be alarmed—he and other athletes will participate in this year’s US Open Opening Night. According to the Official Website of the 2009 US Open, this will be a night “to celebrate athletes who give.” Not only is Andre Agassi known for his fame on the court, but he is also renowned for his humanitarian efforts. In 1994, Agassi founded the Andre Agassi Foundation, which, according to it’s correlating website, “is dedicated to transforming U.S. public education for underserved youth. The Foundation drives reform by engaging in practice, policy and partnerships that provide quality education and enrichment opportunities.” Much of the effort of this foundation is put into running the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, a charter school located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2009 U.S. Opening Night will applaud Agassi’s and other athletes’ humanitarian efforts.
With all the excitement over the past couple of years ensuing the sport, tennis has truly become one of the world’s favorite sports to watch. According to the Official Website of the 2009 US Open, all of the 2009 Grand Slam events have and will be on the ESPN line-up. This much attention has never been given to tennis by any other network.
Thus far, this year has truly been a year of records, rankings, and changes for tennis. With ESPN following the Grand Slam’s every move, the world will be watching as this year’s champions take the U.S. courts. Will Federer end the year with yet another victory? Has Nadal recovered enough from his injury to come back with a bang? Will Söderling get back at Federer for his defeat in the French Open? Better yet, will Roddick get back at Federer for his defeat at Wimbledon? This year’s Opening Night will start off the 2009 U.S. Open with victory for everyone due to athletes like Andre Agassi. We can only hope that the athletics of the 2009 U.S. Open will live up to all of this excitement!
